About Prague 5

Prague 5 stretches south-west from the river opposite the New Town. The municipal district Prague 5 includes Smíchov, Košíře, Hlubočepy (with Barrandov), Radlice and Motol, plus parts of Jinonice, Malá Strana and Břevnov. The administrative district, which we use to group clinics, is larger. It also takes in Prague 13 (Stodůlky and Řeporyje), Prague 16 (Radotín, Zbraslav and neighbouring areas), Slivenec and Zličín. A clinic with a “Praha 13” or “Praha 16” address therefore appears here.

Smíchov is the busiest part of the district. Once an industrial area of factories and breweries (the Staropramen brewery is still here), it has become a business and shopping district centred on the Anděl crossroads. Most of the Prague 5 clinics in our directory are in Smíchov, within walking distance of Anděl.

Where the clinics are

  • Smíchov and Anděl: the largest group, on and around Štefánikova, Stroupežnického and Plzeňská, and towards Smíchovské nádraží. They are easy to reach from the centre: Anděl is three stops from Můstek on line B.
  • Jinonice and Košíře: residential areas further west, along line B (Radlická, Jinonice) and the tram routes to Košíře.
  • Zbraslav: on the far southern edge of Prague, a separate town-like area served by buses rather than the metro.

Getting to a dentist in Prague 5

Metro line B runs the length of the district, with stations at Smíchovské nádraží, Anděl, Radlická, Jinonice, Nové Butovice, Hůrka, Lužiny, Luka, Stodůlky and Zličín. Line A ends at Nemocnice Motol, next to the university hospital. Trams cross Smíchov and climb to Košíře and Barrandov (stops include Anděl, Kotlářka and Sídliště Barrandov). Many clinics in Smíchov are a few minutes’ walk from Anděl, but check each profile for the nearest stop.

Choosing a dentist in Prague 5

  • Languages. A handful of Prague 5 clinics state that they treat patients in English, and some have English-language websites. That isn’t the same as confirmed English speaking staff, so we label those clinics “English website”. If you need English, filter for English speaking clinics or ask when you book.
  • Insurance. Prague 5 has a noticeable number of fully private clinics that say they don’t work with health insurers, alongside clinics with contracts with VZP and other public insurers. If you’re in the Czech public system, or are an EU visitor relying on the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), choose a contracted clinic. The EHIC is not accepted at private clinics without a contract.
  • Specialised care. Some clinics here focus on particular areas, such as prosthetics, implants, jaw-joint (TMJ) problems or treatment under a microscope. The treatments listed on each profile show what we confirmed.
  • Unusual hours. At least one clinic in Smíchov opens on Sundays, and several are open until 20:00 on weekdays. This is useful if you can’t take time off work.

Emergency dentist in Prague 5

Prague 5 is home to Motol University Hospital (V Úvalu 84), which runs the public dental emergency service for children under 18. Adults should go to the services in Prague 1 (Spálená street or Na Františku), which are 10–15 minutes from Anděl by metro or tram, or to the Thomayer hospital site in Prague 4. There is a standard fee of CZK 90, and you don’t need to be registered. Some Smíchov clinics also say they offer urgent appointments during opening hours. Check the emergency dentist page for current hours, and call 155 or 112 for severe swelling or difficulty breathing.

Registering with a dentist

If you live in Prague 5, 13 or 16, our guide on how to register with a dentist in the Czech Republic explains how to find a practice that will take you on. How Czech health insurance covers dental care explains what you’ll pay.
