A veneer is a thin covering fixed to the front surface of a tooth to change how it looks. The Oral Health Foundation compares them to false nails fitted over natural nails. Veneers are a cosmetic treatment: they change the colour, shape or position of the front surface of the tooth, but they don’t treat disease.
According to the Oral Health Foundation, veneers can help with:
There are two main types:
Ask the clinic which type it recommends for your teeth, and why.
For porcelain veneers, treatment usually takes at least two visits:
Removing enamel can’t be undone. Enamel doesn’t grow back, so a tooth prepared for a porcelain veneer will normally always need some kind of covering, such as a new veneer or a crown. Think carefully before treating healthy teeth for purely cosmetic reasons, and ask whether a less invasive option, such as whitening, bonding or orthodontics, could get a similar result.
Veneers need healthy teeth and gums underneath. Tooth decay and gum disease should be treated first. If you grind or clench your teeth, veneers are more likely to chip or come loose, so tell the dentist; they may recommend a night guard. Veneers may not be the best option for teeth that are heavily filled or badly damaged, where a crown might be more appropriate.
The Oral Health Foundation says veneers can last many years if they’re looked after properly, but they can chip, crack or come loose. Small chips can sometimes be repaired; otherwise the veneer has to be replaced. Porcelain veneers generally last longer than composite ones. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth and regular check-ups all help them last.
